"Modern Italian Grammar: a Pratical Guide" by Ann Proudfoot |
Obviously, you cannot base all your learning on this website. A good textbook is a purchase you should consider if you want to learn the Italian language in details (though the same can be said about every other language of the world). But there're different kinds of textbooks for different purposes. There are the typical "learn X in 20 minutes" textbooks, which are fairly unuseful, in my opinion. They provide you with a usually big set of spoken phrases and a quite small and (too much) condensed grammar section. The only thing I can say about these books is that if they cost only a few bucks, there should be a reason. On the other side there're the typical grammar texts for university students and professor. They're typically expensive and sometimes unuseful for self-learners, because they're too difficult and boring, and they don't provide you with the phraseology and the dictionary the "learn X in twenty minutes" textbooks are so rich of. I've spent a lot of time looking for something which can merge these two kind of books in something which can give the learner a complete account of what Italian language is, and can guide him through grammar concepts as well as through the everyday use of the language. I finally found this "Modern Italian Grammar: a Pratical Guide" by Ann Proudfoot. I think this book can be relied upon to study the Italian language. Its 43 chapters are divided into two section. The first is complete grammar reference on the basic structures of the language as nouns, verbs, adjectives and so on. The second, teachs the reader how to express his thoughts using the correct structures of Italian. The approach to the most difficult structures of the language is not academic, but communicative, making it easy for the reader to use them properly. This section of the books covers every aspect of conversation from greetings through giving advices, expressing doubts and reported speech to even the conversation on the phone. I'm sure it is the text I would buy if I wanted to study the Italian language. |

In order to put into practise what you will learn from the textbook, the "Modern Italian Grammar Workbook" by Ann Proudfoot is also available. The book is divided into three sections: Part I provides exercises based on essential grammatical structures, Part II practices everyday functions such as making introductions and expressing needs, Part III contains realistic role plays in short scenes, set in a range of different contexts. |

The Italian verbs' system has many tenses and moods. The learner has to remember them all, and the way they're used togheter too. This is why everybody who aims to something more than knowing the basic expressions, and want to read and write in a good Italian, needs a reference book. "Italian Verb Drills" by Paola Nanni Tate is a good textbook focused only on verbs. There're regular and irregular verbs, without fancy dialogues and stuff like this. Just verbs. It's a fantastic book to help the learner improve his knowledge of the Italian verbs' system. |
